Retail POS Plus may earn a commission when you purchase through links on our site. This does not affect our editorial evaluations — rankings are set by our scoring methodology before affiliate terms are considered. Full disclosure

Omnichannel isn't a feature list; it's a promise to customers: the stock they see online is the stock in your store, they can pick up in an hour, and they can return a web order at any register. Keeping that promise requires one catalog, live sync, and fulfillment + returns logic that spans channels. We scored each system's omnichannel capability as 15% of our overall methodology — on this page it's the whole ballot. Facts verified 2026-08-09; full scoring on our methodology page.

The Rankings

1. Shopify POS — The Clear Omnichannel Leader

4.0/5  Omnichannel subscore: 5.0

Shopify is the only system here where ecommerce is the foundation and the POS plugs into it. Every plan includes POS Lite and a product/inventory pool shared between your website and your register — stock levels update automatically in both directions. Fulfillment options include in-store pickup (BOPIS), local delivery, ship-to-customer and emailed carts; customers are one profile across channels.

POS Pro ($89/mo per location) is where the advanced omnichannel service layer lives: returns and exchanges at any location, endless aisle (sell out-of-stock items from another location or online), professional reports and unlimited staff with roles. Two caveats: skipping Shopify Payments costs an extra 0.6–2% per sale depending on plan, and card payments don't work offline. Neither changes the verdict — if omnichannel is the job, Shopify is the pick.

Pros

  • One inventory, auto-synced across web and stores
  • BOPIS, local delivery, ship-to-customer out of the box
  • Returns/exchanges anywhere + endless aisle (Pro)
  • Unified customer profiles across channels

Cons

  • Advanced omnichannel features Pro-gated ($89/location)
  • 0.6–2% extra without Shopify Payments
  • Card payments don't work offline
  • 100-variant-per-product cap (2,048 rolling out)

2. Square — Solid Built-In Online at Every Price

3.8/5  Omnichannel subscore: 4.0

Square's omnichannel story is unusually generous at the bottom: Square Online — website builder, online ordering, invoicing — comes with every plan including the $0 Free tier, and pickup and local delivery are included everywhere. POS and online store share one catalog and one back office, orders flow into the same dashboard, and you can sell through Google and social channels. Shipping label printing and discounts are on all plans.

The upsell ladder is the familiar one: custom domain, retail preorders, abandoned-cart emails and product reviews need Plus ($49), real-time carrier shipping rates need Premium ($149), and online processing on Free runs 3.3% + 30¢ (2.9% + 30¢ on paid tiers). The web store itself is more basic than Shopify's — fewer themes, less app depth — but as a no-extra-cost extension of a physical store, it's the best value in this ranking.

Pros

  • Square Online included on all plans, even Free
  • Pickup + local delivery included everywhere
  • One catalog and back office for both channels
  • Social/Google selling supported

Cons

  • Custom domain and preorders gated to Plus
  • 3.3% + 30¢ online rate on the Free plan
  • Web store less flexible than Shopify's
  • Square processing mandatory

3. Lightspeed Retail — In Transition; Verify Before Betting on It

3.6/5  Omnichannel subscore: 3.0

Lightspeed's back office is superb, but we have to hedge on its ecommerce story because the accessible evidence is messy. The legacy webstore line (eCom C-Series, paired with the R-Series POS) appears to be in run-off — migration guides to Shopify are common — though no official retirement date was verifiable. The newer X-Series pairs with an eCom (E-Series) app that is still actively updated, and at least one current (August 2026) reviewer still lists built-in eCom among plan features. An official Lightspeed–Shopify integration exists, and third-party connectors sync products, inventory and orders.

If omnichannel is mission-critical, don't buy Lightspeed on yesterday's reputation: ask specifically which webstore product is current for your configuration, what its roadmap is, and get the answer in writing. A pattern we see often instead: Lightspeed for store operations, paired with Shopify for the online side.

Pros

  • Deep inventory behind whatever online layer you use
  • Official Shopify integration; third-party connectors exist
  • Built-in eCom still listed for current plans by some sources

Cons

  • eCom lines consolidated/rebranded repeatedly — status unclear
  • Legacy webstore appears to be winding down
  • Online capability varies by which product line you're on

Choose Lightspeed if: inventory depth is the priority and you're willing to verify — or assemble via integration — the online half yourself. Read the full Lightspeed review or visit Lightspeed →

4. Clover — Online Selling Is App-Based

3.0/5  Omnichannel subscore: 2.5

Clover doesn't ship a native omnichannel suite. Its official direction is the App Market: “sell online” apps and tiles, an official BigCommerce integration page, and third-party Shopify/WooCommerce sync tools from agencies. That works as an add-on — and Clover's register experience is genuinely easy — but inventory sync, order flow and online fees all depend on which app you buy, and those details couldn't be verified from Clover's own pages (they're JS-rendered; one third-party source quotes online store/ordering at ~$49–79/mo, unconfirmed).

Pros

  • App Market can bolt on online ordering/storefront
  • Official BigCommerce integration exists
  • Third-party Shopify/WooCommerce sync available

Cons

  • No native online store or sync engine
  • Online capability and fees vary by app — unverified
  • Omnichannel depth limited versus native suites

Choose Clover if: in-store is 95% of your business and online is a light add-on you're comfortable running through an app. Read the full Clover review or visit Clover →

How We Chose

Our methodology in brief
Each system is scored 0–5 on eight criteria; Omnichannel carries a 15% weight in the overall score. On this page we ranked purely on omnichannel capability: built-in online presence, inventory sync quality, fulfillment options (pickup/delivery/ship), cross-channel returns, and endless aisle. We only count what our fact base could verify (checked 2026-08-09); unverifiable claims are flagged rather than credited. Rankings are editorial, independent of affiliate relationships. Full details on our methodology page.

What It Costs to Go Omnichannel

SystemEntry costOnline processingWhat you get
Square (Free)$0/mo3.3% + 30¢Square Online store, pickup/local delivery, shared catalog; paid tiers cut the rate to 2.9% + 30¢
Shopify (Basic)$20/mo annual ($27 monthly)2.9% + 30¢Full storefront + POS Lite + synced inventory + BOPIS; Pro ($89/location) adds endless aisle and returns-anywhere
Lightspeed~$89/mo+ annual (quoted)~2.9% + 30¢ (quoted)Back office + eCom/integration depending on verified current configuration
CloverBase quote + appsVaries by app/resellerApp-based online selling; fees unverified

The takeaway: a full omnichannel stack is no longer expensive — Square gets you live for $0/month in software, and Shopify's complete version costs one $20–27 subscription. The hidden number to watch is the online processing rate on your channel mix: Square Free's 3.3% + 30¢ versus Shopify Basic's 2.9% + 30¢ is a ~0.4% gap that pays the Shopify subscription itself once online volume passes roughly $7k/month. Worked examples in our pricing guides.

FAQ

What actually counts as “omnichannel” in a POS?

Three things working together: one inventory that updates live across your website and stores, fulfillment choices like buy-online-pick-up-in-store or ship-from-store, and cross-channel service (returns of online orders in-store, customer history everywhere). A POS with a bolted-on web store that doesn't sync stock doesn't qualify.

Is Square Online really free?

Yes — the online store, pickup and local delivery are included on every Square plan, including the $0 Free tier. You pay processing on online sales (3.3% + 30¢ on Free, 2.9% + 30¢ on paid plans), and extras like a custom domain require Plus ($49).

Does Lightspeed still have ecommerce?

Partially, and the picture is in transition: the legacy C-Series webstore appears to be in run-off, the X-Series E-Series app is still updated, and some current sources still list built-in eCom on plans. There's also an official Shopify integration. If omnichannel matters, verify the current configuration for your contract before signing.

Can Clover sync with my existing Shopify store?

Not natively — third-party apps and agencies offer Shopify↔Clover inventory/order sync, and BigCommerce maintains an official Clover integration. Sync quality and cost depend on the app, so test it with your catalog before committing.

Which system is best for BOPIS (buy online, pick up in store)?

Shopify POS and Square both do it well: Shopify includes in-store pickup/local delivery among its fulfillment options (with endless aisle on Pro), and Square includes pickup and local delivery on every plan, even Free. Lightspeed's current state needs verification; Clover's is app-based.

The bottom line

Shopify POS is the best omnichannel POS for retailers in 2026 — one inventory, BOPIS, and a Pro tier that completes the service layer. Square is the best $0/month entry with a genuinely included online store. Lightspeed earns a conditional recommendation until its eCom transition is verified for your setup, and Clover fits only where online is a light, app-based add-on.

Prices and capabilities last checked 2026-08-09 against vendor pages and independent sources. Lightspeed eCom status is in transition and quote-level figures are flagged; Clover online fees unverified. Confirm current terms with the vendor before signing.
