A bike shop's register has to sell a $3,500 bike that is one identifiable unit (with a frame serial number on the receipt and in the warranty file), write up a tune-up that bills two hours of labor plus a cassette and a chain, take a deposit on a wheelset that's coming from a distributor, and maybe put a used trade-in on the floor. Very little of that is "scan a barcode, take a card." Generic retail POS handles the front counter well and the workshop badly — with one exception among the four systems we cover.
We evaluated Shopify POS, Square, Lightspeed Retail and Clover against bike-shop workflows, using vendor-verified facts — pricing pages and official serial-number, special-order and appointments documentation checked 2026-09-17 — and our published methodology. Spoiler on the honest finding: none of the four has a native repair work-order system. How close each one gets, and what it costs, is the whole story.
Why Bike Shops Are Different
Score each of these against your own shop before choosing a system:
- Serialized, high-value inventory. Every bike is a unique unit. You need the serial number recorded at receiving, attached to the sale, and findable later for warranty, theft reports and trade-in history. Lightspeed Retail documents native serial-number selling — serials live under Inventory > Serial numbers, and a July 2026 product update added CSV export of serialized items. Square, Shopify POS and Clover do not document native serial tracking; apps and workarounds fill the gap.
- Repair work orders. The core workshop transaction: one ticket mixing labor and parts, with status, parts on order, and customer notification. Honest finding — none of the four has native work orders. Lightspeed gets closest: service items and quotes are native, and its Workflows feature (Plus plan) can automate custom printing of work orders. Square includes invoicing with estimates and contracts for service billing; full ticketing on all four means third-party apps.
- Special orders and custom builds. Ordered-in components, custom wheel builds, frame-only sales. Lightspeed natively supports special orders — unfulfilled sales tracked on a dedicated Special orders page — plus layby (deposit-and-hold) and on-account sales. Square covers deposits through invoicing; Shopify POS and Clover depend on apps.
- Parts catalogs and vendor ordering. Bike shops live on distributor catalogs. Lightspeed's official pricing page (checked 2026-09-17) lists NuORDER Catalog — accurate catalog data on over 5 million products — plus PO Sync between NuORDER and the POS, on every plan. Nothing comparable is native on the other three.
- Trade-ins and used bikes. No native trade-in workflow on any of the four — this is a process (buy the used bike as inventory, record the credit) rather than a feature. Verify in a demo if it's core to your model.
- Service-vs-retail margin reporting. A healthy shop watches labor and parts margins separately. Lightspeed's reporting is the strongest of the four for splitting sales by category and item type.
Quick Picks for Bike Shops
Lightspeed Retail
Native serial numbers, special orders, layby and service sales, plus NuORDER's 5M+ product catalog and PO sync on every plan. Our only top pick that isn't Shopify or Square.
Why it wins for workshops ↓Square
Free plan with estimates, contracts and invoicing for service billing, $0 start, and POS Plus at $49/mo. Serial tracking and repair ticketing need apps.
When Square is enough ↓Shopify POS
Our top-ranked system overall — best for shops whose growth channel is ecom bike and gear sales. Workshop workflows are all apps.
Why it's niche here ↓Clover
Great counter hardware and a 2.3% + 10¢ retail rate — but serials, work orders and booking all run through third-party apps.
The trade-offs ↓Lightspeed Retail — Best Overall for Bike Shops
3.6/5 Serials, special orders & parts catalogs
This is the one vertical where our #3 overall system beats our #1. Lightspeed Retail — which began its life serving exactly these kinds of specialty retailers — natively covers the workflows that make bike shops hard: serial numbers (official documentation: recorded and tracked under Inventory > Serial numbers, with serialized-item CSV export added in the July 2026 product updates), special orders on a dedicated Special orders page, layby for deposits and holds, on-account sales, and service items with quotes for workshop billing. On top of that, every plan includes NuORDER Catalog (5M+ products) and PO Sync — order from distributor catalogs and sync the PO straight into your inventory — verified on Lightspeed's official pricing page (2026-09-17).
What still isn't native, and what it costs:
- No native work orders: service sales and quotes are native; full repair-ticket workflows with status tracking need apps or the Workflows automation (Plus plan, $289/mo annual), which can automate custom printing of work orders.
- Price: officially $89 (Basic) / $149 (Core) / $289 (Plus) per month on annual billing ($109/$179/$339 month-to-month), $59/mo per extra register — verified 2026-09-17. Loyalty and advanced reporting arrive at Core; forecasting, API access and Workflows at Plus.
- Card-present rate: 2.6% + 10¢ on all plans — good, but Clover's Retail Growth tier publishes 2.3% + 10¢.
- Learning curve: the deepest toolset here takes the longest to learn, and annual billing is the standard structure.
Bike-shop pros
- Native serial-number tracking — bikes are serialized units, not quantities
- Special orders, layby, on-account and service sales all native
- NuORDER 5M+ product catalog and PO sync on every plan
- Best reporting for splitting service vs retail margins
Bike-shop cons
- No native repair work orders — apps or Plus-tier Workflows
- $89–$289/mo plus $59 per extra register
- 2.6% + 10¢ trails Clover's published retail rate
Choose Lightspeed if: your workshop and your parts ordering are the business — serialized bikes, special orders and vendor catalogs in one system are worth the highest software bill of the four. Read the full review or visit Lightspeed →
Square — Best for Small Shops with Light Service
3.8/5 $0 start + service invoicing
If you're a one-or-two-counter shop where service means tune-ups billed as line items rather than a tracked workshop pipeline, Square covers more than you'd expect for $0. Its official pricing page (checked 2026-09-17) includes invoicing with estimates and contracts on the Free plan — enough to quote a repair, bill labor and parts, and take a deposit. Plus ($49/mo per location) adds inventory tracking, purchase orders, barcode labels, stock counts, the loyalty program and staff management. Rates are 2.6/2.5/2.4% + 15¢ in person by tier, with a 30-day free trial on paid plans.
Where a bike shop outgrows it:
- No native serial tracking: bikes as unique serialized units isn't a documented Square capability — apps or catalog workarounds only.
- Repair ticketing via apps: status-tracking work-order apps exist on the Square App Marketplace; verify fit and cost before committing.
- Special orders are manual: no equivalent of a dedicated Special orders page — hold-and-deposit runs through invoices and notes.
- The 15¢ fixed fee: at bike-shop ticket sizes it's modest, but at volume it adds up (see the cost table).
Bike-shop pros
- Estimates, contracts and invoicing for service billing on Free
- $0 entry; tracking, POs, labels and loyalty at Plus ($49/mo)
- 30-day free trial on paid plans; no long-term contract
Bike-shop cons
- No native serial-number tracking
- Repair work orders and ticketing via third-party apps
- Special orders managed manually via invoices
Choose Square if: service is a side dish, budget is tight, and you'd rather bolt on one repair-ticket app than pay for a deeper back office. Read the full review or visit Square →
Shopify POS — Online-First Bike Retail Only
4.0/5 Best ecom — not workshops
Shopify POS is our top-ranked system overall, and for a workshop-centric bike shop it's the weakest fit of the four:
- No native serials, no work orders, no layaway: all three core bike-shop workflows run through third-party apps on Shopify POS.
- Retail tools gated: purchase orders, stock counts and staff roles sit behind POS Pro at $89/mo per location, on top of a plan starting at $20/mo (annual, POS Lite included) — verified 2026-09-17.
- No parts-catalog ordering: nothing like NuORDER's distributor catalog sync is native.
The exception is the online-first bike retailer: a shop whose real channel is an ecom store moving bikes, gear and apparel, with in-store pickup and returns anywhere. There, Shopify's one-catalog omnichannel sync is the best available — online rates from 2.9% + 30¢ (Basic), in-person around 2.4–2.7% by plan.
Bike-shop pros
- Best online + in-store sync for ecom-led bike and gear sales
- BOPIS, returns anywhere, one inventory across channels
- POS Lite from $20/mo (annual) keeps entry cheap
Bike-shop cons
- Serials, work orders and layaway all via apps
- POs and counts behind POS Pro ($89/mo per location)
- No native parts-catalog ordering
Choose Shopify POS only if: your workshop is small and your webshop is the business. Otherwise, Lightspeed (workshop-first) or Square (budget-first) fit better. Read the full review or visit Shopify POS →
Clover — Great Register, Most Apps Required
3.0/5 Fast counter · 2.3% + 10¢
Clover's strengths are real: the Station Duo register ($1,899 one-time, or $180/mo × 36 all-in) is the fastest-feeling front counter of the four, the Retail Growth tier publishes a 2.3% + 10¢ in-person rate — the best of the group — and it bundles item and category management, detailed sales reports, itemized returns, shift management, loyalty, promotions and gift cards (official retail pricing page, read 2026-09-17). If your shop's bottleneck is the checkout line on Saturday, Clover solves that problem well.
But a bike shop's hard parts are all app-shaped on Clover:
- No native serial tracking — the single most important bike-shop inventory need.
- No work orders, no special orders, no layaway natively — the App Market fills these gaps at per-app monthly costs that stack up.
- Usable tier isn't cheap: the $16/mo × 36 (or $349) Starter bundle explicitly excludes inventory management — a bike shop needs Retail Growth at $84.95/mo plus hardware.
- Contract structure: 36-month commitments online; reseller quotes may differ. Get terms in writing.
Bike-shop pros
- Official 2.3% + 10¢ retail rate — best published of the four
- Fastest register on one-time-purchase hardware
- Loyalty, promotions and gift cards bundled in Retail Growth
Bike-shop cons
- No native serials, work orders, special orders or layaway
- App-stack costs add up at bike-shop needs
- 36-month contracts; reseller terms vary
Choose Clover if: counter throughput and the processing rate dominate your economics and your workshop runs on a board and a marker. Otherwise it's the weakest fit of the four for this vertical. Read the full review or visit Clover →
Must-Have Features Checklist for Bike Shops
Use this table when comparing quotes — gating notes reflect each vendor's official pages as checked 2026-09-17:
| Feature | Why it matters for bike shops | Where it's gated |
|---|---|---|
| Serial-number tracking | Every bike is a unique unit; warranty, theft, trade-in history | Lightspeed: native (Inventory > Serial numbers; CSV export since July 2026); Square/Shopify/Clover: apps or workarounds |
| Repair work orders | Labor + parts on one ticket, status, notifications | None native. Lightspeed: service items + quotes native, Workflows (Plus) can print work orders; Square: estimates/contracts/invoices; all four: ticketing apps |
| Special orders & deposits | Ordered-in components, custom builds | Lightspeed: native special orders + layby; Square: invoicing; Shopify/Clover: apps |
| Parts catalogs & vendor POs | Distributor ordering is daily life | Lightspeed: NuORDER 5M+ catalog + PO Sync on every plan; Square: POs at Plus+; Shopify: POS Pro; Clover: apps |
| Trade-in workflow | Used bikes on the floor | Not native on any of the four — process or apps; verify in a demo |
| Service vs retail reporting | Labor and parts margins tracked separately | Lightspeed strongest; Clover Retail Growth includes detailed reports; Square advanced reporting at Premium |
| High-ticket processing rate | $75+ average tickets make the percentage dominate | Clover: 2.3%+10¢ (Retail Growth); Square: 2.6/2.5/2.4%+15¢; Lightspeed: 2.6%+10¢; Shopify: ~2.4–2.7% by plan |
What Bike Shops Actually Pay
Take a bike shop doing $45,000/month across ~600 card transactions (a $75 average ticket). Monthly processing-plus-software math, at list rates:
| System & tier | Processing | Software | Total /mo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clover Retail Growth (2.3% + 10¢) | $1,095 | $84.95 | $1,179.95* |
| Shopify Grow (~2.6% in-person) | $1,170 | $49 | $1,219* |
| Square Plus (2.5% + 15¢) | $1,215 | $49 | $1,264 |
| Lightspeed Core (2.6% + 10¢) | $1,230 | $149 | $1,379 |
| Lightspeed Basic (2.6% + 10¢) | $1,230 | $89 | $1,319 |
*Clover's figure is before hardware ($1,899 Station Duo one-time, or $180/mo × 36 all-in) and assumes the official online Retail Growth rate — reseller quotes may differ. Shopify's approximate in-person rate (~2.4–2.7% by plan, checked on Shopify's POS pricing page 2026-09-05) wins on paper, but every bike-shop workflow on this page is an app there. Lightspeed costs $100–200/month more than the cheapest option — weigh that against native serials, special orders and parts catalogs. Full worked examples for other volumes live in Best Retail POS Systems.
FAQ
Which POS is best for a bike shop?
For most bike shops, Lightspeed Retail: it's the only one of the four with native serial-number tracking (every bike is a unique unit), plus native special orders, layby, on-account sales, service items and quotes, and NuORDER's 5M+ product parts catalog with PO sync on every plan. Square fits smaller shops with light service; Shopify POS fits online-first bike retailers; Clover fits shops that mostly need a fast register.
Can these POS systems manage repair work orders?
Not natively — none of the four has a built-in repair ticket system. Lightspeed is closest: service items and quotes are native, and the Workflows feature on its Plus plan can automate custom printing of work orders. Square bills service through estimates, contracts and invoicing (free). Full ticketing with status tracking on any of the four means a third-party app — or a dedicated bike-shop platform like Ascend.
Do any of these track bike serial numbers?
Lightspeed Retail does, natively and officially documented: serials are recorded and tracked under Inventory > Serial numbers, and a July 2026 update added CSV export of serialized items. Square, Shopify POS and Clover do not document native serial tracking — you'd use apps or catalog workarounds, which matters for warranty files and theft reports on high-value bikes.
What does a bike shop POS cost per month?
Software runs $0 (Square Free) to $289/mo (Lightspeed Plus), with Clover's Retail Growth at $84.95/mo plus $1,899 hardware. Processing dominates at bike-shop ticket sizes: at $45,000/month across 600 transactions, the four systems span roughly $1,180–$1,379/month combined at list rates. The cheapest system on paper isn't always the cheapest once you price the app stack.
Is Shopify POS good for bike shops?
Usually not. Serial tracking, repair work orders and layaway — the core bike-shop workflows — are all third-party apps on Shopify POS, and its retail tools sit behind POS Pro at $89/mo per location. The exception is an online-first bike retailer whose webshop for bikes, gear and apparel rivals the counter, where Shopify's omnichannel sync is the best available.
Picks reflect our 8-category weighted scoring (inventory 20%, pricing & value 15%, payment processing 15%, omnichannel 15%, hardware 10%, ease of use 10%, support 10%, reporting 5%) applied to bike-shop workflows.
