Retail POS Plus exists to answer the questions vendor pages won't: what a system really costs at your card volume, which features sit behind which tier, and where the workflow gaps are. To do that consistently, every evaluation follows the method below.
Eight Criteria, Fixed Weights
Each system is scored 0–5 on eight criteria. Weights reflect what retail merchants tell us matters most — inventory operations lead, because a POS that can't run your back office fails no matter how nice the register is.
| Criterion | Weight | What we evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory Management | 20% | SKUs and variants, POs, receiving, transfers, counts, barcode workflows, multi-location stock |
| Pricing & Value | 15% | Subscription cost per location, tier gates, hardware pricing, contract fairness, cost predictability |
| Payment Processing | 15% | In-person/online rates, processor choice or lock-in, extra fees, offline behavior |
| Omnichannel | 15% | Online + in-store inventory sync, BOPIS, ship-to-customer, unified customers, cross-channel returns |
| Hardware | 10% | Device quality and pricing, BYOD support, peripheral compatibility, lock-in |
| Ease of Use | 10% | Setup time, register speed, staff training, back-office clarity |
| Customer Support | 10% | Channels and hours by tier, documented responsiveness |
| Reporting | 5% | Sales, inventory and staff reporting depth; what's gated by tier |
Scoring and the Weighted Total
Each criterion gets a score from 0 to 5 in 0.5 steps. The overall score is the weighted sum, rounded to one decimal. Scores are comparative — a 4.0 means “strong across our criteria relative to the field,” not a percentage of some theoretical maximum.
Worked example — Shopify POS:
| Criterion | Score | Weight | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inventory Management | 3.5 | 20% | 0.70 |
| Pricing & Value | 3.5 | 15% | 0.525 |
| Payment Processing | 4.0 | 15% | 0.60 |
| Omnichannel | 5.0 | 15% | 0.75 |
| Hardware | 4.0 | 10% | 0.40 |
| Ease of Use | 4.5 | 10% | 0.45 |
| Support | 4.0 | 10% | 0.40 |
| Reporting | 3.5 | 5% | 0.175 |
| Weighted total | 4.0 / 5 | ||
Notice what the math shows: Shopify POS earns its 4.0 largely on best-in-class omnichannel and strong processing/ease-of-use scores, while the POS Pro feature gate holds back inventory and pricing subscores. The same arithmetic is published in every review's score breakdown.
Three Evidence Layers — Labeled
Not all claims are equal, so we label them:
- Vendor-confirmed facts. Prices, rates and feature tables taken directly from official vendor pages, each with a “last checked” date (e.g., Shopify plan pricing and the POS Lite/Pro comparison, checked 2026-08-08).
- Editorial analysis. Our own judgments — scores, “best for” calls, workflow advice. Opinion, clearly built on the facts above it.
- Merchant-community feedback. Recurring themes from merchant forums, reviews and third-party evaluations (e.g., complaints about feature gating or support). We label these as third-party reports and never present them as our own testing.
When official pages can't be verified, we say so explicitly, quote figures from multiple independent sources, and mark them to verify with the vendor. (As of September 2026, all four vendors' official pricing pages — Shopify, Square, Lightspeed and Clover — are read directly at each pricing check; Clover's Fiserv-reseller channel figures still carry hedge marks because resellers set their own terms.)
How Updates Work
Each product record carries a lastPricingCheck and lastFeatureCheck date. We re-check pricing against vendor pages on a regular schedule and immediately after announced changes (for example, Square's October 2025 plan restructuring). When a page shows a price or rate, the “checked” date tells you how fresh it is; vendors can change terms at any time, so final confirmation always belongs with the vendor.
Correction Policy
If a fact on this site is wrong — a price, a rate, a feature gate — we want to know and we fix it. Corrections are made in the content itself and the page's “updated” date is changed; significant changes are noted on the page. Send corrections to matthew@retailposplus.com or via our contact page.
The Affiliate Firewall
We may earn commissions when you buy through links on this site (details on our affiliate disclosure). Those commissions never set rankings: scores are computed from the weighted criteria above before affiliate terms are considered, and commission rates are not an input to any criterion. You can see the result in the output itself — different products win different categories (overall, small stores, inventory depth, hardware), which is not what a commission-maximizing list looks like. Editorial content and affiliate relationships are managed separately; writers are evaluated on accuracy and usefulness, not on referral revenue.
Current scores and subscores appear in every review and in our ranked comparison: Best Retail POS Systems.
