Retail POS Plus may earn a commission when you purchase through links on our site. This does not affect our editorial evaluations — rankings are set by our scoring methodology before affiliate terms are considered. Full disclosure

Square is the most transparently priced POS we track — plans, rates and hardware are published on official pages, and all figures below were pulled from them (plus Square's hardware shop) when we checked on 2026-08-09. The catch isn't hidden prices; it's which tier your workflows live on. Since the October 6, 2025 restructuring, inventory tracking, purchase orders and barcode labels all require the $49 Plus plan. Here's the full picture, including what a real first year costs at two volumes.

Square POS Plans at a Glance

PlanPrice (per location)What you get
Free$0/moSquare POS + Square Online store, online ordering, invoicing, Square Banking, basic item library. No inventory tracking, POs or barcode labels.
Plus$49/moAll 7 POS modes, advanced inventory (tracking, POs, labels, counts), loyalty, marketing tools, staff management, lower in-person rate.
Premium$149/moNearly all Square software: PO import, transfer orders, advanced reporting, 24/7 phone support, lowest rate, 0% gift-card load fee.

Notes from the official pricing page: the monthly fee for Plus and Premium applies per location; both paid plans carry a 30-day free trial and you can cancel or switch anytime (month-to-month — no long-term contracts is how Square presents it). Square also has custom/enterprise-style pricing for businesses processing $250K+/year in card sales (reported by third parties, not shown on the public pricing page), and legacy “Square for Retail” tiers (Plus at $89/mo) still appear for some existing merchants — new US sign-ups get the three unified plans above.

Feature Gates: What Each Tier Unlocks

Retail capabilityFreePlus ($49)Premium ($149)
Item library, auto item images
Low-stock alerts
Inventory tracking (stock on hand)
Barcode label printing
Labels printed from received POs
Vendor & purchase-order management
Import purchase orders
Stock counts / counting tool
Cross-location transfer orders
Product bundles, unit costs, inventory history
Inventory reports (aging, COGS, sell-through)
Vendor sales report / advanced reporting

Rule of thumb: if you need to know what's on your shelves, you're on Plus. If stores move stock between each other or you import vendor POs, you're on Premium. The Free plan is a payment + basic-storefront product, not an inventory product.

Payment Processing Fees

Square's own processing is mandatory — you cannot bring another processor — and rates improve slightly by tier (US, from the official pricing page):

EBT (SNAP)1.8% + 5¢1.8% + 5¢1.8% + 5¢
Cash or checkFreeFreeFree

Two extra fee rows worth knowing: gift-card loads cost 2.5% on Free/Plus but 0% on Premium, and international card transactions add 1.5% on all plans. EBT processing fees are waived during a beta running through fall 2026. Note that the October 2025 revamp raised the in-person fixed fee from 10¢ to 15¢ per transaction — a real increase for small-ticket retailers.

Because Square processing is mandatory (Square doesn't support third-party processors), you can never negotiate interchange or shop rates later. Model Square's flat rates against your actual volume before committing — at high volume or large average tickets, that lock-in is the most expensive line in this guide.

Hardware Costs

DeviceOne-time priceFinancing option
Square Register (2-screen countertop)$899$44/mo × 24
Square Handheld$399$37/mo × 12
Square Terminal (all-in-one w/ printer)$299$27/mo × 12
Square Stand (iPad POS stand)$149$14/mo × 12
Square Kiosk$149$14/mo × 12
Reader: contactless + chip (2nd gen)$59
Reader: magstripe (USB-C)$10
mPoP printer + cash drawer$549

The POS apps themselves run on your own iPhone, iPad or Android device — Tap to Pay on a phone needs no hardware at all — so the minimum viable register is $10–59. Financing is offered through Block (purchases $49–$10,000, 15% APR cited on the hardware page, not available in AL, DE, MO, MS, NH or TN); at 15% APR, paying cash is usually the better deal. Barcode scanner pricing wasn't verifiable from official pages (a made-for-Square Socket Mobile scanner has been cited around $199 by press coverage — treat as an estimate).

First-Year Total Cost: Two Worked Examples

Example 1 — Boutique doing ~$10,000/month (~400 transactions, $25 average)

Cost lineSquare FreeSquare Plus
Software$0/mo$49/mo ($588/yr)
Processing /mo~$320 (2.6% + 15¢ × 400)~$310 (2.5% + 15¢ × 400)
Processing /yr~$3,840~$3,720
Hardware (contactless + chip reader)$59 one-time$59 one-time
Year-one total~$3,899~$4,367

At this volume the rate difference between Free and Plus saves only ~$10/month — far less than the $49 fee. You upgrade to Plus for the inventory tools, never for the rate.

Example 2 — Busier store doing ~$30,000/month (~1,500 transactions, $20 average)

Cost lineFreePlusPremium
Software /yr$0$588$1,788
Processing /mo~$1,005 (2.6% + 15¢ × 1,500)~$975 (2.5% + 15¢ × 1,500)~$945 (2.4% + 15¢ × 1,500)
Processing /yr~$12,060~$11,700~$11,340
Year-one total~$12,060~$12,288~$13,128

Assumptions: all sales card-present at each tier's published in-person rate, 15¢ fixed fee identical across tiers, no paid apps, no payroll, hardware excluded from Example 2. Your ticket size and channel mix will shift these — get your effective rate in writing.

The counterintuitive result: at $30k/month, Free remains the cheapest tier in pure cost because the per-transaction 15¢ is identical everywhere and the percentage savings (0.1–0.2%) don't cover the subscription. Break-even math: Plus pays for itself on rates only above ~$49k/month in card volume, Premium only above ~$74.5k/month. Below that, you pay for tiers to unlock features. And for context: at $30k/month, processing alone (~$12k/yr) dwarfs any software decision on this page.

Hidden and Extra Costs

  • Keyed-in sales cost 3.5% + 15¢ — a full point above in-person rates. If much of your business is phone/mail/card-on-file, model that mix, not the headline rate.
  • Gift-card loads are 2.5% on Free and Plus (0% only on Premium), and international cards add 1.5%.
  • Afterpay (buy-now-pay-later) is 6% + 30¢ — price it as a marketing cost, not a payment cost.
  • Add-on subscriptions stack. Square Payroll runs roughly $35/mo + $6/person for full service (third-party figure), and deeper inventory via MarketMan is listed at $99/mo per location on paid plans.
  • Processor lock-in. Mandatory Square processing means no interchange negotiation ever — the long-term cost most buyers overlook.
  • Per-location billing. Plus/Premium fees multiply by store count; a 3-store Premium chain pays $447/mo in software alone.

How to Pay Less

  • Stay on Free until a gate actually blocks you. No stock tracking, POs or labels needed? $0/month is the correct price. Upgrade to Plus ($49) the day inventory workflow matters, not before.
  • Use the 30-day trial. Both paid plans offer one, and you can cancel or switch anytime — test your real catalog inside the trial window.
  • Don't upgrade for the rate. Below ~$49k/month (Plus) or ~$74.5k/month (Premium), the subscription costs more than the rate saves. Upgrade for features only.
  • Buy the right hardware. A $299 Terminal covers most single-lane stores; the $899 Register is for dual-screen counters. Start with a $59 reader if you already own a tablet.
  • Compare your ticket size against Shopify. If your average ticket is large and transaction count low, Shopify Basic's flat subscription can undercut Square's per-transaction math — see our Shopify POS pricing guide for the side-by-side.

FAQ

Is Square POS really free? What's the catch?

The Free plan is genuinely $0/month — the catch is capability, not price: no inventory tracking, purchase orders or barcode labels (those need the $49 Plus plan), Square processing is mandatory at 2.6% + 15¢ in person, and phone support ends after your first 90 days.

What's the difference between Plus and Premium?

Plus ($49/location) adds the retail inventory kit — tracking, purchase orders, barcode labels, stock counts, bundles, inventory reports — plus loyalty and staff management. Premium ($149/location) adds PO import, cross-location transfer orders, label printing from POs, advanced reporting, 24/7 phone support, the lowest rate (2.4% + 15¢) and 0% gift-card loads.

Can I use my own payment processor with Square?

No. Square doesn't support third-party payment processors — Square processing is required, which is why the flat-rate math above is the only math. That also means you can't negotiate interchange later.

Should I finance Square hardware?

Usually not. Financing runs through Block at a 15% APR cited on the hardware page (and isn't available in six states). A $299 Terminal paid cash beats $27/mo × 12 = $324; pay upfront if you can.

I've seen “Square for Retail Plus $89/mo” — which price is right?

Both, for different merchants. Before October 6, 2025, Square for Retail sold a $89 Plus tier; the revamp replaced 18 subscriptions with the unified Free/$49/$149 plans for new US sellers, while some legacy merchants still see old pricing. If you're signing up today, the table above is what applies.

Methodology & last checked
Plan prices, feature gates, processing rates, trial terms and hardware prices above were checked against Square's official pricing, retail pricing, hardware and Square Shop pages on 2026-08-09; they reflect the October 2025 unified-plan restructuring. Square Payroll pricing is a third-party figure (LIKELY, not official). Example calculations state their assumptions and use published rates only. See how we review.
