Quick Verdict

3.8/5

Square is the lowest-friction way to run a small retail store. The Free plan costs $0 per location and covers the register, a Square Online store and invoicing — you pay only 2.6% + 15¢ per in-person transaction. The catch: real retail inventory — stock counts, purchase orders, barcode labels — requires Plus at $49/mo per location, and Square mandates its own payment processing. Start free, and upgrade only when a specific gate becomes your bottleneck.

Pricing and Plans

On October 6, 2025, Square replaced 18 different à la carte subscriptions with three unified bundles, priced per location (verified on Square's official pricing page, checked 2026-08-08):

PlanPriceIn-person rateWhat you get
Free$0/mo per location2.6% + 15¢POS, Square Online store, invoicing, basic item library — you pay only processing
Plus$49/mo per location2.5% + 15¢Advanced inventory, loyalty, marketing tools, staff management, lower rate
Premium$149/mo per location2.4% + 15¢Nearly all Square software, advanced reporting, 24/7 phone support, lowest rate

Both paid plans carry a 30-day free trial, and Square says you can cancel or switch plans anytime — we found no long-term contracts in the current terms. Square does not publish a self-serve enterprise tier; custom "Pro"-style pricing is aimed at businesses processing roughly $250K+/yr in card sales (third-party reporting — get a quote if that's you). Older reviews may cite a legacy "Square for Retail Plus" at $89/mo — that structure predates the October 2025 revamp, and new US sellers now get the unified plans above.

What's actually gated: Free vs Plus vs Premium

This is the table that decides your real Square bill. Retail inventory basics are not on the free plan (source: Square's official plan comparison, checked 2026-08-08):

Retail capabilityFree ($0)Plus ($49)Premium ($149)
Item/SKU library, scan-to-ring-up
Low-stock alerts
Inventory tracking (stock on hand)
Stock counts / counting tool
Barcode label printing
Print labels from received purchase orders
Vendor & purchase order management
Import purchase orders
Transfer orders between locations
Product bundles
Inventory reports (aging, COGS, sell-through)
Vendor sales report / advanced reporting

In plain terms: if you need to know what's on your shelves — counts, receiving, reorder paperwork — you're on Plus at $49/mo per location. If you run more than one store and want to push transfer orders between locations or import POs in bulk, that's Premium at $149/mo. That gating is the main reason Square scores a 3.0 on inventory despite an otherwise excellent system.

Payment Processing

Square is a payments company first: its POS only works with Square's own processing — the company has confirmed it does not support third-party processors, so you cannot bring an existing merchant account or negotiate interchange. Rates are flat and transparent (US, verified 2026-08-08):

Transaction typeFreePlusPremium
In-person (tap/dip/swipe)2.6% + 15¢2.5% + 15¢2.4% + 15¢
Keyed-in / card on file3.5% + 15¢3.5% + 15¢3.5% + 15¢
Online (incl. invoices)3.3% + 30¢2.9% + 30¢2.9% + 30¢
ACH bank transfer (invoice)1%, $1 min1%, $1 min, $10 cap1%, $1 min, $10 cap

Smaller fee lines worth knowing: gift-card loads cost 2.5% on Free/Plus (0% on Premium), international cards add 1.5%, and EBT (SNAP) runs 1.8% + 5¢ with fees waived during the beta through fall 2026. Cash and checks are free on every plan. Note that the 2025 revamp raised the in-person fixed fee from 10¢ to 15¢ per transaction — a real increase for small-ticket retailers. At high volume or high average tickets, flat-rate pricing works against you: run the numbers in our buying guide before assuming "free plan" means cheapest.

Hardware

Square sells a fairly priced, good-looking hardware lineup (official prices verified 2026-08-08):

DevicePriceFinancing option
Square Register (2-screen countertop)$899$44/mo over 24 months
Square Handheld$399$37/mo over 12 months
Square Terminal (all-in-one with printer)$299$27/mo over 12 months
Square Stand (iPad POS stand)$149$14/mo over 12 months
Square Kiosk$149$14/mo over 12 months
Reader for contactless + chip (2nd gen)$59
Reader for magstripe (USB-C)$10

Financing is offered by Block for purchases of $49–$10,000 (15% APR cited on Square's hardware page; not available in every state). The POS app itself runs on your own iPhone, iPad or Android device, and Tap to Pay on phone takes card payments with zero extra hardware. Accessories — receipt printers, scanners, scales, cash drawers — are sold through Square Shop (the mPoP printer + drawer combo is $549); card readers must be Square's, so don't plan on reusing another system's payment devices.

Inventory Management

Square covers retail inventory, but only once you pay for it. On Plus you get on-hand stock tracking, stock counts, vendor and purchase order management, barcode label printing, unit costs, product bundles and proper inventory reports (aging, COGS, sell-through, projected profit) — a workable toolkit for a boutique doing regular receiving. On Premium you add bulk PO import, printing barcode labels straight from received POs, cross-location transfer orders and vendor sales reports.

Barcode workflows deserve specifics: scanning to ring up sales works on every plan; printing shelf labels starts at Plus; labeling from a received PO is Premium. Returns and exchanges are supported in Square for Retail POS, and Square has rolled out exchanges to all Retail POS sellers. Square doesn't publish per-plan item limits and is generally described as unlimited on items — fine for most boutiques; if you run tens of thousands of SKUs with heavy receiving, Lightspeed Retail is the deeper tool. For advanced inventory beyond Square's native set, the App Market lists integrations such as MarketMan (quoted around $99/mo per location on Plus or above).

Ecommerce and Omnichannel

Every Square plan includes a Square Online store on the same catalog — one back office for register and web sales, with pickup and local delivery included on all plans and shipping label printing/discounts too. Custom domains require Plus; retail preorders, abandoned-cart emails, product reviews and bundles/subscriptions are Plus-and-up; real-time carrier shipping rates are Premium. It's a genuinely useful included webstore for a small retailer — though it isn't the omnichannel engine Shopify POS offers once online sales become a large share of revenue.

Customers, Staff and Reporting

The customer directory collects and segments shoppers automatically on every plan; the loyalty rewards program starts at Plus. Staff features are the same story: basic selling and permissions are free, while timecards with breaks/overtime, clock-in passcodes, scheduling and time-off, unlimited custom permission sets and tip pooling/commissions are Plus-and-up. Square Payroll is a separate add-on (full-service commonly quoted around $35/mo plus ~$6/person). Reporting follows the tiers: basic sales and reconciliation on Free; inventory, staff, labor-cost and marketing reports on Plus; vendor sales and "advanced reporting" on Premium.

Ease of Use and Support

This is where Square earns its reputation. Reviewers who hands-on tested it for 2025–26 — including Expert Market — describe setup, barcode uploads and day-to-day sales working "with almost no guidance," and you can literally sign up, download the app and take a payment the same day. Support is where the tiers bite: chat + email on all plans, but phone support on Free runs 6am–6pm PT, Monday–Friday, for your first 90 days only; Plus keeps those weekday phone hours indefinitely; Premium gets 24/7 phone support. Recurring complaints in merchant forums: occasional account reviews that temporarily restrict funds, slow phone reachability on lower tiers, and frequent updates that move settings around. None are unique to Square, but they're the themes to know before committing.

Alternatives

  • Omnichannel-first: Shopify POS — better online/in-store sync if web sales matter. See Shopify POS vs Square.
  • Inventory-first: Lightspeed Retail — deeper POs, receiving, serials and multi-location tools.
  • Hardware-first: Clover — polished buy-once devices, but reseller-set pricing.

Who Should Use It — and Who Shouldn't

Choose Square if…

You run one or two small stores, want predictable flat-rate costs with no contract, and value the cheapest possible start ($0 plan, $59 reader). It's the best on-ramp in this comparison — and Plus at $49/mo is reasonable once you need stock counts, purchase orders and barcode labels.

Skip it if… you process high volume or large average tickets (flat rates cost more than negotiated interchange, and you can't bring your own processor), you need bulk PO import or cross-location transfer orders without paying $149/mo, or your catalog is SKU-heavy with complex receiving — that's Lightspeed territory.
Methodology
Scores use our published 8-category weights (inventory 20%, pricing 15%, processing 15%, omnichannel 15%, hardware 10%, ease of use 10%, support 10%, reporting 5%). Square's plan prices, rates, feature gates and hardware costs above were parsed from squareup.com's official pricing and hardware pages on 2026-08-08 and reflect the October 2025 plan restructuring. Final Verdict

Square remains our pick for small retail businesses: nobody matches a $0 start with this level of polish, and its flat-rate simplicity is a genuine feature. The October 2025 revamp sharpened the trade — serious retail inventory now clearly costs $49/mo per location, and Square's processing lock-in is non-negotiable. Model your real card volume against the rates above; if the math works, start on Free and upgrade to Plus the day you need your first purchase order.

FAQ

Is Square POS really free?

The Free plan is: $0 per location per month, with POS, a Square Online store and invoicing — you pay processing (2.6% + 15¢ in person). Retail inventory tools like stock counts, purchase orders and barcode labels are not included; those require Plus at $49/mo per location.

What does Square Plus add for a retail store?

The retail essentials: inventory tracking and stock counts, vendor and purchase order management, barcode label printing, product bundles, inventory reports (aging, COGS, sell-through), plus loyalty, marketing tools, advanced staff management and a lower 2.5% + 15¢ in-person rate.

Can I use my own payment processor with Square?

No. Square's POS works only with Square's own processing — Square has publicly confirmed it does not support third-party processors. If you have a merchant account you want to keep, look at Shopify POS or Lightspeed Retail (Core plan and up) instead.

Does Square POS work on my own tablet or phone?

Yes — the POS app runs on your own iPhone, iPad or Android device, and Tap to Pay on phone accepts contactless cards with no extra hardware. Card readers, however, must be Square's (from the $59 contactless + chip reader up to the $899 Register).
