Retail POS Plus may earn a commission when you purchase through links on our site. This does not affect our editorial evaluations — picks are based on verified product facts and our published methodology. Full disclosure

A grocery register has to do things most retail POS systems were never designed for: weigh a bag of apples off a scale or a price-embedded barcode, take an EBT card and automatically strip tax from SNAP-eligible items while splitting the rest onto a second tender, keep a five-digit-item catalog honest through weekly deliveries, and control shrink on product that expires. Miss any one of those and the system is unworkable — no matter how good its ecommerce features are.

We evaluated Shopify POS, Square, Lightspeed Retail and Clover against grocery workflows, using vendor-verified facts — including official EBT, scale and pricing documentation checked 2026-09-10 — and our published methodology. One honest caveat up front: full-service supermarkets with belt lanes, networked deli scales and self-checkout are the territory of dedicated grocery POS vendors. The four systems here suit independent grocers, neighborhood markets and specialty food stores — and we say plainly where each one falls short.

Why Grocery Stores Are Different

Write down where these workflows show up in your store before choosing a system — each stresses the POS in a distinct way:

  • Produce and bulk: selling by weight. The register must price per pound or kilogram — from a connected scale, a manually entered weight, or a price-embedded barcode printed by a label scale. Square documents all three paths officially; Lightspeed supports weighted products and embedded weight/price barcodes; Clover's scale support runs through third-party apps and resellers; Shopify POS has no native sell-by-weight (apps exist). This is gate number one for any grocer.
  • EBT/SNAP acceptance. For many neighborhood markets, SNAP is a double-digit share of revenue. The system must accept EBT, mark which items are SNAP-eligible, remove tax automatically and split mixed baskets across tenders. Square now does all of this natively in Retail mode; Clover supports EBT across its device line (enabled through your rep); Lightspeed and Shopify POS have no documented EBT support — confirm with sales before assuming.
  • Five-digit SKU counts and price integrity. A small grocer carries 10,000–40,000 items with weekly price changes. You need fast CSV import, barcode label printing and vendor/PO workflows to keep the shelf tag and the register agreeing. Lightspeed's back office is the deepest here; Square gates tracking, POs and labels to Plus; Clover has no native PO workflow; Shopify's tools sit behind POS Pro.
  • Perishables and shrink. Expiry tracking, markdowns and daily waste logs are where grocery margins die. None of the four systems documents native expiry-date tracking — this is handled via catalogs, apps or process. Honest note: vertical grocery systems build this in.
  • Checkout speed at moderate volume. Grocery tickets run 20–40 items at $25–40. Fast scanning, quick keys for unbarcoded produce, and a customer-facing screen matter more than any marketing feature. Clover's register and hardware lead here; Square is close behind.
  • Case-break and unit conversion. Selling single cans from a case you bought by the pack. Square supports stock conversion (sell a case's units individually); Lightspeed handles composite products; verify your exact mix in each demo.

Square — Best for Independent Grocers and Markets

3.8/5 Best $0 start + native EBT

For a neighborhood grocer or market, Square now checks the two boxes that used to force grocers into vertical systems. First, EBT: per Square's official support documentation (checked 2026-09-10), Square accepts EBT SNAP payments on Square Register, Terminal and Handheld running in Retail mode — automatically removing tax from SNAP-eligible items, splitting mixed baskets across tenders, and handling short balances. You need a USDA FNS number, items must be tagged SNAP-eligible, and the processing fee is 1.8% + 5¢ — waived during the open beta. EBT Cash (TANF) is not supported. Second, weight: Square officially documents three ways to sell by weight — manual weight entry, a connected scale with tare support, and price-embedded barcodes from a label-printing scale — plus PLU codes via item variations.

The grocery caveats are real:

  • Inventory tools are gated: since the October 2025 plan revamp, inventory tracking, purchase orders, barcode labels and stock counts require Plus ($49/mo per location); PO import, transfer orders and 24/7 phone support arrive at Premium ($149/mo). At 10,000+ SKUs you'll want Plus at minimum.
  • The 15¢ fixed fee is the story: in-person rates are 2.6/2.5/2.4% + 15¢ on Free/Plus/Premium. At grocery transaction counts, that fixed fee adds up — model it before choosing (see the cost section).
  • Hardware restrictions on EBT: EBT works on Register, Terminal and Handheld — not Square Stand or other iOS devices — and chip-and-tap-only devices need a compatible reader to swipe EBT cards. EBT also requires a live connection (no offline EBT).
  • Perishables: no native expiry-date tracking — verify with Square or plan a process.

Grocery pros

  • Native EBT/SNAP in Retail mode — tax handling and split tenders automatic
  • Official sell-by-weight: connected scales, tare, price-embedded barcodes, PLUs
  • $0 entry; Plus adds tracking, POs, labels and counts for $49/mo
  • CSV item-library import for five-digit catalogs

Grocery cons

  • 15¢ per transaction hurts at grocery volumes (EBT excepted while waived)
  • EBT excluded on Square Stand and iOS devices
  • Inventory and label tools gated to Plus ($49/mo)
  • No native expiry tracking for perishables

Choose Square if: you run an independent grocery or market, EBT and weighed produce are must-haves, and the fee math works at your transaction count. Read the full review or visit Square →

Clover — Best Checkout Hardware and Retail Rates

3.0/5 Best register & device line

Clover's strengths line up with the front of a grocery store: a fast register on buy-once hardware — Station Duo ($1,899, merchant and customer screens) or the Flex handheld — and an official Retail Growth bundle at $84.95/mo with a 2.3% + 10¢ in-person rate, the best published card-present rate among the four at typical grocery tickets. EBT is also in scope: per Clover's official developer documentation (checked 2026-09-10), EBT is supported across Mini, Mobile, Flex, Compact, Station Solo and Station Duo — covering both SNAP food benefits and EBT Cash (TANF, swipe only), with the usual USDA FNS authorization required.

The cautions are specific to this vertical:

  • EBT must be enabled by your rep: Clover's documentation states EBT entitlement "must be professionally enabled" through your Clover Business Consultant — it is not self-service like Square's, and EBT is in-person only.
  • Scales are third-party territory: weight-scale integration is not a documented native Clover capability — options exist through resellers and app providers. Verify your exact scale model works before signing anything.
  • No native back office: purchase orders, receiving and structured cycle counts are not native — paid apps fill the gaps, and costs stack at grocery SKU counts.
  • Reseller-dependent everything: software bundles, rates, 36-month contract terms and early-termination fees depend on who sells it to you (official online terms: 36-month commitments; $450 statement-credit promo runs through 2026-12-31). Get at least two written quotes.

Grocery pros

  • Official 2.3% + 10¢ retail rate — best published rate of the four
  • EBT on the whole device line, including EBT Cash
  • Fast register, one-time hardware purchase, customer-facing screens

Grocery cons

  • Scale support via third parties — verify before buying
  • EBT enabled only through your Clover rep, in-person only
  • No native POs or cycle counts; apps stack costs
  • 36-month contracts; reseller terms vary

Choose Clover if: checkout speed and processing rate matter more than back-office depth, EBT via your rep is acceptable, and you've verified scale integration in writing. Read the full review or visit Clover →

Lightspeed Retail — Best Back Office for High-SKU Catalogs

3.6/5 Best for 10,000+ SKUs

Some grocers are really inventory businesses: weekly deliveries from a dozen distributors, constant cost changes, and a floor that shrinks without disciplined counts. Lightspeed's back office is in a different league from the other three — purchase orders, receiving, reorder points, vendor catalogs, transfers and cycle counts, with the strongest reporting of the group. Weighted products are officially supported (price per unit of measure, quantity entered as weight), as are barcodes with embedded weight/price; direct connection to a weighing scale runs through integrations rather than natively.

The trade-offs matter at this vertical. Plans are officially $89 (Basic) / $149 (Core) / $289 (Plus) per month on annual billing ($109/$179/$339 month-to-month), with $59/mo per extra register and each additional location priced the same as the base plan — verified on Lightspeed's official pricing page (2026-09-10). EBT is the gap: Lightspeed Payments' EBT/SNAP support is not documented in our verified facts — if a meaningful share of your customers pay with benefits, confirm EBT capability in writing before considering Lightspeed. The learning curve is also the steepest of the four, and expiry tracking for perishables is not a native feature.

Grocery pros

  • Deepest PO/receiving/count/reorder toolset for five-digit catalogs
  • Weighted products and embedded weight/price barcodes officially supported
  • Best-in-class reporting for shrink and category performance
  • Same 2.6% + 10¢ card-present rate on every plan

Grocery cons

  • EBT/SNAP support not documented — confirm before buying
  • Highest software cost; per-register and per-location fees multiply
  • Scale connection via integrations, not native
  • No native expiry tracking; steepest learning curve

Choose Lightspeed if: your catalog and vendor workflow are where the store makes or loses money, EBT volume is small or confirmed available, and front-end speed needs are moderate. Read the full review or visit Lightspeed →

Shopify POS — Usually the Wrong Fit for Grocery

4.0/5 Best omnichannel — not this vertical

Shopify POS is our top-ranked system overall, and for a typical grocer it's still the wrong tool. The specific mismatches:

  • No native sell-by-weight: weighed produce and price-embedded barcodes are core grocery workflows; on Shopify POS they require third-party apps from the App Store rather than native features.
  • No documented EBT/SNAP support: benefits payments are not part of Shopify Payments' documented capabilities — disqualifying for markets serving EBT customers.
  • Offline limits: Shopify POS does not process card payments offline (cash and custom methods still work and sync later) — a real risk for a register that rings all day.
  • Cost without payoff: the retail tools a grocer would need (POs, counts, staff roles) sit behind POS Pro at $89/mo per location on top of a plan starting at $20/mo (annual, POS Lite included).

The exception is the online-first specialty food store: a butcher, bakery or gourmet shop whose real growth channel is a webshop, curbside pickup and local delivery. There, Shopify's one-catalog omnichannel sync is the best in the business — online rates from 2.9% + 30¢ (Basic) and in-person rates around 2.4–2.7% by plan.

Grocery pros

  • Best-in-class online + in-store sync for curbside and delivery
  • BOPIS and local delivery included
  • POS Lite from $20/mo (annual) keeps entry cheap

Grocery cons

  • No native sell-by-weight — apps only
  • No documented EBT/SNAP support
  • Card payments require an internet connection
  • POS Pro ($89/mo per location) needed for POs and counts

Choose Shopify POS only if: you're a specialty food retailer whose online and delivery business rivals the counter. Otherwise pick from the systems above — or quote a grocery vertical system. Read the full review or visit Shopify POS →

Honest take: if you run a full-service supermarket — belt lanes, networked deli scales, self-checkout, USDA-compliant price signage — none of the four systems reviewed here is built for that. Dedicated grocery POS platforms (IT Retail, MarketPOS and similar) do it natively. The four above fit independents, neighborhood markets and specialty food stores. Get one vertical quote to keep everyone honest.

Must-Have Features Checklist for Grocery Stores

What Grocery Stores Actually Pay

Take an independent grocer doing $60,000/month across ~2,400 card transactions (a $25 average ticket). Monthly processing-plus-software math, at list rates:

System & tierProcessingSoftwareTotal /mo
Square Free (2.6% + 15¢)$1,920$0$1,920
Square Plus (2.5% + 15¢)$1,860$49$1,909
Clover Retail Growth (2.3% + 10¢)$1,620$84.95$1,705*
Lightspeed Core (2.6% + 10¢)$1,800$149$1,949

*Before Clover hardware ($1,899 Station Duo one-time, or $180/mo × 36 all-in) and any reseller rate differences — a written quote is essential. The EBT line changes Square's math materially: at a 25% EBT mix ($15,000/month), the 1.8% + 5¢ EBT fee is waived during the open beta, saving roughly $480/month versus card rates at that volume. If your store serves a benefits-heavy customer base, that alone can decide the choice. Full worked examples for other volumes live in Best Retail POS Systems.

FAQ

Which POS is best for a small grocery store?

For most independent grocers, Square is our pick among the four: native EBT/SNAP in Retail mode, officially documented scale and price-embedded barcode support, and a $0 or $49/mo entry. Clover wins on checkout hardware and its official 2.3% + 10¢ rate if EBT-via-rep and third-party scales are acceptable. Lightspeed fits SKU-heavy stores, and Shopify POS fits online-first specialty food retail.

Can these POS systems accept EBT/SNAP?

Square yes — natively in Retail mode on Register, Terminal and Handheld, with a USDA FNS number and SNAP-eligible item tagging; the fee is 1.8% + 5¢, waived during the open beta (checked 2026-09-10). Clover yes — supported across its device line, but it must be enabled by your Clover Business Consultant. Lightspeed and Shopify POS have no documented EBT support — confirm in writing with sales.

Can a retail POS weigh produce?

Square documents three official paths: connected scale with tare, manual weight entry, and price-embedded barcodes from a label-printing scale. Lightspeed supports weighted products and embedded weight/price barcodes, with scale connections via integrations. Clover's scale support comes from third-party apps and resellers; Shopify POS requires third-party apps for sell-by-weight.

What does a grocery POS cost per month?

Software runs $0 (Square Free) to $149–$289/mo (Square Premium / Lightspeed Plus), with Clover's Retail Growth bundle at $84.95/mo plus $1,899 hardware. But processing dominates: at $60,000/month in card volume, the four systems span roughly $1,705–$1,949/month in combined processing and software at list rates. Model your own ticket size and EBT mix before choosing.

Is Shopify POS good for grocery stores?

Usually not. It has no native sell-by-weight or documented EBT support, and card payments don't work offline — all core grocery needs. The exception is a specialty food store whose main growth channel is online ordering, curbside and local delivery, where Shopify's omnichannel sync is the best available.
