Quick Verdict

Stay on Square Free if you run one location with a modest catalog, ring sales at the counter or on your phone, and don't yet reorder with purchase orders or print barcode labels. It costs $0/month per location — you pay only processing (2.6% + 15¢ in person) — and it includes Square Online, invoicing and pickup/local delivery.

Upgrade to Square Plus ($49/mo per location) when a specific gate becomes your bottleneck: inventory tracking, purchase orders and vendor management, barcode label printing, stock counts, loyalty rewards, or real staff management. Plus also lowers your in-person rate to 2.5% + 15¢ and your online rate to 2.9% + 30¢.

The short version: Free is a complete register; Plus is a retail operations kit. Both plans require Square's own processing, and both are month-to-month with a 30-day free trial on paid tiers — so the decision is gate-driven, and testing the upgrade is risk-free.

All figures verified against Square's official pricing page (squareup.com/us/en/pricing) on 2026-08-27, including the plan–feature matrix. Plans reflect Square's October 2025 unified pricing revamp; per-location fees apply to each location you run.

What's Included in Square Free

Square Free isn't a demo — it's the same POS app, with no monthly bill. You get:

  • The full register: checkout on iPhone, iPad, Android or Square hardware, including Tap to Pay on your phone — you can literally start selling with zero hardware.
  • Item library with SKUs and auto item images, plus low-stock alerts — basic catalog care is covered.
  • Square Online included: a website builder and online store on the same catalog, plus pickup and local delivery, invoicing and Square Banking.
  • Scan-to-ring-up at checkout — barcode scanning works; printing your own labels doesn't.
  • Basic reporting: sales insights, reconciliation and daily summary emails.

For an owner-operator or a single store with a simple catalog, Free covers the day-to-day completely. Its limits only show up when inventory stops fitting in your head.

What Square Plus Unlocks: The Feature Gates

Everything below sits behind Plus at $49/mo per location — this is the gate list from Square's official plan comparison (re-verified 2026-08-27):

One gate worth flagging before you upgrade: some retail tools wait for Premium ($149/mo per location) — importing purchase orders from CSV/Excel, cross-location transfer orders, printing barcode labels straight from received POs, the vendor sales report and 24/7 phone support. If those are your bottlenecks, the comparison you actually need is Square's full plan ladder.

Cost Math: When Does Plus Pay for Itself?

Plus changes two numbers at once: +$49/mo per location, and lower processing rates. The rate savings depend on volume:

Breakeven testRate savingVolume where the $49 pays for itself
In-person sales2.6% → 2.5% (0.1 point)$49,000/mo in card-present volume
Online sales3.3% → 2.9% (0.4 points)$12,250/mo in online volume

Worked example for one store doing $30,000/month in card sales (≈600 transactions, ~$50 average ticket, all in person):

Cost lineSquare FreeSquare PlusNotes
Software /mo$0$49Per location; 30-day free trial on Plus
Processing /mo~$870 (2.6% + 15¢)~$840 (2.5% + 15¢)≈600 transactions at ~$50
Total /mo~$870~$889
Year-one difference$228 ($19/mo, Free cheaper)At $30k/mo, rates don't repay the subscription

Two rules fall out of the math. First, below ~$49k/month in-person, upgrade for a feature gate — not for the rate. At $30k/month, Free is actually $19/mo cheaper all-in; at $60k/month the table flips and Plus edges ahead (~$1,729 vs ~$1,740) before counting any feature value. Second, online-heavy stores break even much earlier: the 0.4-point online drop means ~$12,250/mo in Square Online sales covers the whole $49.

When to Upgrade: Let the Gate Decide

Our rule: upgrade when a specific gate becomes your bottleneck — not before. Each gate has a tell:

  • Inventory tracking: you're guessing stock levels, overselling, or counting shelves from memory.
  • Purchase orders & vendors: you reorder over email and lose track of what's incoming and what's owed.
  • Barcode label printing: you're buying pre-printed labels or handwriting them.
  • Stock counts: shrinkage or year-end counts cost you days because there's no counting workflow.
  • Loyalty rewards: repeat customers are your business and you have no way to reward them natively.
  • Staff management: you've hired beyond a tiny team and need timecards, schedules and per-role permissions.
  • Custom domain: your Square Online store needs yourdomain.com, not a subdomain.

The math is simple: $49/mo is worth it the moment the gate costs you more than that in lost sales, shrinkage or manual workarounds — and with a 30-day free trial and no contract, testing it costs nothing.

Who Should Stay on Free

  • Owner-operators and family stores with simple catalogs who know their stock by sight.
  • Pop-ups, markets and seasonal sellers who need a register some months, not an operations platform all year.
  • Mostly-online sellers using Square Online with light in-person volume — until online sales cross ~$12,250/mo, Free's rate is fine.
  • Merchants covering gaps with apps: the Square App Market can supply some workflows without upgrading — though compare app fees against the $49 plan.

FAQ

Is Square Free really free?

Yes — $0/month per location with no trial clock. You pay only processing fees (2.6% + 15¢ in person, 3.3% + 30¢ online, 3.5% + 15¢ keyed-in), and you can stay on it indefinitely. Square's own pricing FAQ confirms there are no monthly subscription costs on the Free plan.

Does Square Plus change my processing rates?

Two of the three: in-person drops from 2.6% + 15¢ to 2.5% + 15¢, and online drops from 3.3% + 30¢ to 2.9% + 30¢. Keyed-in stays 3.5% + 15¢ on both plans. Premium ($149) goes one step further to 2.4% + 15¢ in person.

Can I try Square Plus before paying?

Yes — Square Plus and Premium each offer a free 30-day trial, and you can cancel or switch plans anytime. There's no long-term contract on either plan; billing is month-to-month.

What does Square Plus still not include?

Importing purchase orders from CSV/Excel, cross-location transfer orders, printing barcode labels directly from received POs, the vendor sales report and 24/7 phone support — those sit on Premium at $149/mo per location. Gift-card load fees are also 2.5% until Premium, where they drop to 0%.

Can I bring my own payment processor on either plan?

No. Square POS works only with Square's own processing on every plan — the difference between Free and Plus is features and rates, not processor choice. If processor flexibility is a hard requirement, compare Shopify POS vs Square.

Do I need Plus for multiple locations?

No — multi-location selling works on Free. But if you upgrade, the $49/mo fee applies to each location you run, so a three-store upgrade is $147/mo. Cross-location transfer orders specifically require Premium.
