Every POS can look up a barcode. The differences show up when the delivery arrives: can you receive against a purchase order, print labels from it, move stock between locations, track serial numbers, and run a cycle count without a spreadsheet? This ranking is built on those workflows, using our verified fact base (checked 2026-08-09) and the inventory criterion from our methodology — the single heaviest-weighted one at 20%.

Square

Plus ($49/location) unlocks tracking, purchase orders and barcode labels; Premium ($149) adds transfers and PO import. Nothing on the Free plan, so budget the tier.

Weakest Native Kit

Clover

Items, variants and low-stock alerts are fine, but purchase orders, vendors and cycle counts live in paid App Market apps. Real capability = app spend.

The Rankings

1. Lightspeed Retail — Best-in-Class Inventory Depth

3.6/5  Inventory subscore: 5.0

Lightspeed's back office is the reason specialty retailers put up with its price and learning curve. The catalog handles matrix variants, bundles and vendor assignment; the purchasing workflow runs from purchase orders through receiving to reorder points; multi-location stock transfers and cycle counts are native; and serialized items and repair/work-order workflows make it the default choice for bike shops, jewelers and musical-instrument stores. Its reporting (4.5 subscore — the strongest we track) closes the loop, with aging, sell-through and demand-side insights.

The caveats are real. Pricing is officially $89/$149/$289 per month on annual billing — the highest entry here — with Lightspeed Payments required on the Basic tier. It's iPad-only, steeper to learn than Square or Shopify, and reviewers' accounts of exactly which features sit on which plan conflict, so demo your specific workflows before signing. Details in our Lightspeed pricing guide.

Pros

  • Deepest PO, receiving and transfer workflows here
  • Serialized items and work orders natively
  • Reorder points and supplier/vendor network
  • Best reporting and analytics of the four

Cons

  • Highest price; annual billing typical (~$89 entry, quoted)
  • Lightspeed Payments required on Basic
  • iPad-only hardware; steeper learning curve
  • Plan–feature mapping varies by source — verify on demo

Choose Lightspeed if: inventory operations are your business — high-SKU catalogs, serialized goods, frequent receiving, multi-store stock movement. Read the full Lightspeed review or visit Lightspeed →

2. Shopify POS — Strong Tools Behind the Pro Gate

4.0/5  Inventory subscore: 3.5

Shopify's inventory story is good and getting better — but you pay for it per location. POS Lite (included from the $20/mo Basic plan) gives you basic stock levels on a catalog that syncs automatically with your online store. The serious toolkit — inventory counts, purchase orders, low-stock alerts, plus staff roles — unlocks with POS Pro at $89/month per location, and stock transfers between locations are supported in the admin. Barcode label printing is documented in Shopify's help materials (rated LIKELY in our fact base; re-verify during your trial).

Two structural limits matter for inventory-heavy stores: products cap at 100 variants (with a 2,048-variant rollout reaching some stores), so deep size/color matrices need workarounds or apps, and deeper gaps get filled by paid App Store apps. If your catalog is broad rather than deep, and online + in-store sync matters, this is the best all-around package.

Pros

  • Counts, POs and low-stock alerts in POS Pro
  • One catalog synced across online and stores
  • Stock transfers between locations
  • Huge app ecosystem for specialized needs

Cons

  • $89/mo per location gate for the real tools
  • 100-variant-per-product cap for matrix catalogs
  • Advanced gaps filled by paid apps
  • Card payments don't work offline

Choose Shopify POS if: you want strong-enough native inventory plus the best online/in-store sync, and you can budget Pro at each location. Read the full Shopify POS review or visit Shopify POS →

3. Square — Capable, but Every Step Is Gated

3.8/5  Inventory subscore: 3.0

Since the October 2025 plan revamp, Square's inventory capability has become a tier ladder. Free gets you an item library, low-stock alerts and scan-to-ring-up — but no stock-on-hand tracking. Plus ($49/mo per location) unlocks the essentials: inventory tracking, stock counts, purchase orders and vendor management, barcode label printing, product bundles and inventory reports (aging, COGS, sell-through). Premium ($149/mo) adds the advanced layer: importing purchase orders, printing labels directly from received POs, cross-location transfer orders and a vendor sales report.

That gating is the whole story: Square can run a credible inventory operation at $49, but you should assume the tier you need is one above the one you'd like to pay for. Square processing is mandatory, which removes any lever to offset the software cost. Serialized items and work orders aren't part of the package at any tier.

Pros

  • Full PO + tracking kit at the mid-price Plus tier
  • Inventory reports (aging, COGS, sell-through) on Plus
  • Low-stock alerts on every plan
  • 30-day free trial on paid tiers

Cons

  • Free plan has no stock tracking at all
  • Transfers and PO import gated to Premium
  • No serial tracking or work orders
  • Square processing mandatory

Choose Square if: your inventory needs are moderate and you want the cheapest credible path to purchase orders at $49/mo. Read the full Square review or visit Square →

4. Clover — Native Inventory Is Thin; Apps Fill the Gaps

3.0/5  Inventory subscore: 2.5

Clover handles the register-level inventory basics: items with SKUs and barcodes, variant-level tracking (each size/color counted separately), categories, and low-stock threshold alerts. Where it falls behind is the back office: native Clover has no purchase-order or vendor management, no structured cycle-count workflow, and no native audit trail — those come from App Market apps at roughly $10–100+/month each.

If you shortlist Clover for an inventory-driven store, price the apps into your quote from day one — a PO/inventory app plus a counting app can add $1,200+/year on top of reseller-set software fees, which changes the comparison with Square Plus ($49/mo all-in for those basics).

Pros

  • Variant-level item tracking with barcodes
  • Low-stock threshold alerts built in
  • App Market can approximate a full inventory suite

Cons

  • No native purchase orders or vendor management
  • Cycle counts and audits need paid apps
  • App subscriptions stack onto reseller-set fees
  • Multi-location sync reported as limited (verify)

Choose Clover if: inventory is light (few SKUs, infrequent reorders) and you're buying Clover for its hardware and day-to-day ease, not its back office. Read the full Clover review or visit Clover →

How We Chose

Our methodology in brief
Each system is scored 0–5 on eight criteria; Inventory Management carries the largest single weight at 20%, with Pricing & Value 15%, Payment Processing 15%, Omnichannel 15%, Hardware 10%, Ease of Use 10%, Customer Support 10%, Reporting 5%. On this page we ranked by inventory capability itself — PO/receiving/transfer/serial workflows and what each tier actually unlocks — rather than overall score, which is why the page order differs from our overall ranking. Scores come from verified product facts and published editorial analysis, not affiliate relationships. Full details on our methodology page.

What It Costs to Unlock Real Inventory Workflows

SystemTier neededSoftware costWhat that unlocks
LightspeedBasic (entry)~$89/mo annual (quoted)Native POs, receiving, transfers, counts, serials; Lightspeed Payments required
ShopifyBasic + POS Pro$20–27/mo + $89/mo per locationCounts, purchase orders, low-stock alerts, roles, reports
SquarePlus / Premium$49 / $149 per locationPlus: tracking, POs, labels, counts · Premium: PO import, transfers
CloverBase + apps$16+/mo (official online) + ~$10–100+/mo appsPO/vendor/cycle-count capabilities via App Market

Two patterns explain this market. Shopify and Square gate native tools by tier, so your real cost is the tier price, not the sticker price. Clover starts cheap and reconstructs the same features as recurring app spend. Lightspeed is the inverse: everything native from the entry tier, but the entry tier is the most expensive here and bundles its payments. At one location, Square Plus ($49) is the cheapest complete PO setup; Lightspeed earns its premium only when you'll actually use the depth.

FAQ

Which POS has the best purchase-order workflow?

Lightspeed Retail, clearly: POs, receiving, vendor catalogs, reorder points and label printing are native and deep. Shopify POS Pro and Square Plus both include purchase orders; Clover needs a paid app.

Can I track inventory on Square's Free plan?

Not really. Free gives you an item library and low-stock alerts, but no stock-on-hand tracking, counts, purchase orders or barcode labels. Those start at Plus ($49/mo per location).

Is Lightspeed worth it for a store with under 1,000 SKUs?

Usually not. Below that complexity, Square Plus ($49) or Shopify with POS Pro covers counts, POs and labels for less money and less learning curve. Lightspeed's premium pays off with serialized items, heavy receiving and multi-location transfers. See our small-business ranking for the budget view.

Does Shopify POS print barcode labels?

Yes, label printing is documented in Shopify's help materials, though we rate it LIKELY rather than confirmed because the relevant Help Center pages blocked our last re-check (2026-08-09). Test it with your own label stock during the trial.

Do any of these track serialized items?

Only Lightspeed does natively (a named strength for bike, jewelry and electronics-style retail). Shopify, Square and Clover don't offer native serial tracking; Clover's App Market may have partial solutions — verify before relying on it.

The bottom line

Lightspeed Retail is the best POS for inventory management in 2026 if depth is the job — POs, receiving, transfers, serials and counts are all native. Shopify POS is the pick when inventory must sync with a serious online channel (budget $89/location for Pro). Square Plus is the cheapest complete PO setup at $49, and Clover only fits light-inventory stores willing to pay for apps.

Prices and feature gates last checked 2026-08-09 against vendor pricing/feature pages and independent sources. Square gates reflect the October 2025 plan restructuring. Lightspeed figures are quote-level (official pricing page blocked crawlers); confirm with the vendor before signing.
